Sir Albert Costain Memorial Awards 2024

The SACMA winners for 2024 were Julio Arribasplata, Tim Chatfield and Jonathan Kennedy

Julio Arribasplata was the youngest of the three winners and at the very early stages of his career. He is a graduate civil engineer and is in the final year of the graduate training programme and at the time was working on the A1 Birtley to Coal House project.

Julio is well regarded by the Costain Highways England team and the judges were particularly impressed that Julio was taking every opportunity to develop his ongoing training and was demonstrating the core values and behaviours that are so important to the Company. They also noted his communication skills and his attention to detail, especially around quality control which had been noticed by the client who had praised his open and collaborative style and enthusiasm in ensuring that any defects were identified and promptly rectified.

Tim Chatfield joined Costain’s sponsored student training programme in 2016 whilst at Southampton University then joining the Graduate Scheme in 2018, becoming a Chartered Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) in 2023 which was within 5 years of graduating.

The judges considered Tim to be a worthy recipient of the Award as he clearly demonstrated that training and development does not stop once a person achieves Chartered Status. Tim has continued and is a Supervising Civil Engineer for 2 graduate civil engineers and is currently supporting them towards achieving chartered status. He has also undertaken many other training opportunities with Costain and is a regular attendee of industry events, including British Water and ICE events. He authored two articles that were published in industry magazines in 2023, promoting Costain’s Finham Project in the Water Industry Online magazine and Costain’s commitment to Nature Based Solutions in a featured article in the Institute of Water magazine.

Jonathan Kennedy is a managing consultant within Costain’s P3M (Project, Programme and Portfolio Management) Team, and for the last three years has been assisting the MoD with the development of its’ Devonport Facility, he joined Costain as a Project Controls Apprentice and has ensured that his career has progressed by completing a raft of training courses, mostly in his own time, which have taken him from an apprentice towards achieving Chartered Status with the Association of Project Managers.

The judges were pleased to see that while concentrating on his own career, Jonathon also provided significant help to others especially graduates from other companies joining the Devonport programme in ‘onboarding’ the Fleet 22 Programme Team, as well as Commercial, Cost, Programme and Design briefings. Jonathan is a trusted and respected member of the team regularly earning the praises of the Programme Manager and Director and has been recognised outside of the JV and awarded the ‘Assistant Project Manager of the Year’ at the APM Project Controls Expo, an outstanding accolade and richly deserved.
