Sir Albert Costain Memorial Awards 2020

The 2020 winners were Gemma Small, Georgia Roberts and Ross Trickett. Unfortunately, the 2020 Annual Dinner had to be cancelled because of Covid. However, an online presentation is being arranged for Gemma, Georgia and Ross. This will be copied to all staff so that they will receive the profile within the Company that their wins deserve.

Georgia Roberts is a Geospatial engineer located at Manchester,

Since joining the Graduate programme, Georgia has demonstrated her ability to show innovative and creative problem solving skills. For example, by using Costain’s GIS training programme, she has created automated workflows that significantly reduce time spent on repetitive manual tasks (up to 30% time savings). She is enthusiastic, hardworking, an advocate of best practice and has a positive attitude to her work, being an invaluable team member. She uses all opportunities and resources to further her knowledge and to gain further professional qualifications.

The judges considered Georgia’s use of the Costain training programmes, her innovative contributions to the business and her enthusiasm for further learning and qualifications were unique, making her a unanimous winner.

Gemma Small  is a civil and structural engineer located at Manchester.

Gemma is an exceptional Engineer, and communicator. She is highly thought of by her colleagues, not only in her professional work but in the support that she gives to other team members, enabling them to keep up to date with Industry Best Practice and to improve efficiency. She always seeks ways to develop her personal and professional skills whether this is producing innovative design solutions; training programmes; representing Costain at an international conference or as a mental health first aider.

The judges were impressed by Gemma’s personal and professional development, her innovative design solutions and her technical and best practice support to her team members. She has also assisted in the use of tailored training programmes for other engineers, all of which made her a clear choice as a winner.

Ross has consistently demonstrated an enthusiasm to learn – challenging himself with courses of increasing depth in electrical and electronic engineering and has now embarked on a BSc degree in construction management. He has been described as “a past, present and future star and one who will help Costain to grow their own talent and overall capability”

Helping others to develop through their training is one of the key criteria in judging these awards, Ross has shown this in abundance and together with his model performance in his own professional development, validates his selection as a winner by the judges.
